Alexandria teacher goes the extra mile to keep students active

Since 2015, students at Charles Barrett Elementary have been making a difference in the lives of other students with their “Adopt-a-Gym” fundraiser.

Four years ago, Kevin McGrath created Adopt-a-Gym, where schools raise funds to purchase physical education equipment for other schools that don’t have the resources. Students at Charles Barrett Elementary have already adopted six schools, including one in Louisiana and one in El Salvador. This year they’ll adopt schools that were affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“It makes me feel like a hero,” said Ava Brown, 3rd grader at Charles Barrett Elementary.

“It teaches the kids that philanthropy is how much you’re willing to make a difference, not how much money you have, or power,” McGrath said.
